The Mississippi Magnolia Chapter of the CPCU Society in conjunction with with the American Institute for Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters sponsored the Mississippi I-Day event on September 24, 2009. Mississippi I-Day our state's premier insurance education promotion and training day. Jeff McGee (right), our chapter Vice President, exhibited all day at the event, pictured here with Chapter President Donna Rademacher (center) and past president Mark Mays (left). Our chapter provided education promotion materials, specialty items, and encouragement to over 150 college insurance majors from three major Mississippi universities and to over 200 insurance professionals at the event. We promoted chapter visibility, connected with local insurance employers and with insurance education providers, as well as the young professionals of the future in these students. We had fun, too! :)

| Black History Month Luncheon |
 |
 |
Continuing a tradition begun last year, in Feburary, the Mississippi Magnolia Chapter of CPCU, has chosen to celebrate Black History Month, honor a local prominent business person, as well as gain valuable insight in the history, the challanges, the shared struggles and the value of diversity in our industry. This year, we were honored to have Mr. Matthew Thomas, President of Statewide General Agency, speak to us. He was the first African American agency owner in the state of Mississippi. Mr. Thomas shared his personal historic career path, and the fundamental truth about our industry and what it represents. "I have never seen an insurance company deny a claim based on race," Mr. Thomas shared, stating that we can all be proud to work in an industry that keeps its promises. He challenged us all to live up to our word and to act in an ethical manner at all times. Mr. Thomas told us the story of getting his license during segregation and how he got his first agency appointment by writing personal letters to the company presidents of every insurance company in the United States. He said he was extremely grateful that Travelers Insurance Company 'took a chance on me' in Feburary of 1970. Thirty-seven years later his agency is consistently among their top producers. He said there is still much we all can do to stand up for what is good and just and right in our business. Mississippi Magnolia Chapter honored former Mississippi Insurance Commissioner George Dale at a luncheon to recognize his dedicated service and significant contributions to our insurance education, our professional designation and the industry as a whole. Mr. Dale is a man of honor who served our state well for 32 years and it was our pleasure to present him with a plaque and certificate. Also, speaking in honor of Mr. Dale were: Current MS Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney, current Deputy Commissioner Lee Harrell, voice of the industry Greg Copeland, MIM's Tom Quaka, and EMC's Frankie Box.

| Featured Web Site: Mississippi Magnolia |
|
We continue to feature CPCU Society chapter web sites. We hope to share ideas and formats, recognize webmasters who have done a great job, and encourage chapters to constantly update and improve their web sites. This month we are featuring the Mississippi Magnolia Chapter web site.
Some highlights of the Mississippi Magnolia Chapter web site:
Thanks to Mississippi Magnolia’s webmaster and president elect, W. Mark Mays, CPCU. Mark was inspired at the 2007 Leadership Summit, and has helped his chapter gain new members, build new traditions, and created a great virtual community for the chapter.
Webmaster’s Tip: "When the baton was passed to me in Orlando, I knew that a chapter web site would improve our internal communications and increase our visibility, but I did not think I could do it with my limited web abilities. What I have found was tremendous support from the Society, outstanding user-friendly website tools, content suggestions. With this great help, we created a great web presence for our chapter that has informed and transformed just about everything we do. Member participation and energy is way up and it has been fun to do!"
